The use of the Internet continues to grow into American Households. A survey conducted in 2010 by the Census Bureau found 70% of households had access to the Internet with 60% had access to high speed Internet. The most visited type of websites is social networking. In October 2011, 3 of the top 5 sites visited in the US were social networking sites.

What is the draw to these sites? Individuals seeking like minded people to share their ideas and passions.

This is same is true with genealogists.

Genealogists use social networking to connect with one another to share and assist their ancestry quest. But have you tried the popular social network sites like Google, Facebook, and Ancestry.com but haven’t found what you’re looking for? One social networking site you may not heard, meetup.com, may assist you.

What is Meetup.com?

Meetup.com is a social website for local communities to self-organize and meet face-to-face with like-minded people with the same hobbies or ideals. Meetup groups range from hiking outdoor enthusiasts, Angry Birds fans, mommy groups, and, yes, genealogists.

Genealogist meetup groups have an array of different activities such as a trip to Elis Island, monthly seminars and classes, and even having breakfast together. Being able to meet in person other genealogists has many benefits and can be found as a great joy.

To search for upcoming meetup activities:

  • Visit meetup.com
  • Search for your topic (located on the left hand side of the homepage)
  • Enter your city/state location
  • Press search

If you are unable to find a local group either broadening you keyword search, sign up for an e-mail alert when a group is created, or create your own group. To learn more about creating groups and fees that are associated, visit meetup.com
