#6 Top Spokesperson Who Have Come and Gone: GEICO Cavemen

GEICO Caveman

“GEICO, so easy a caveman can do it.”

This phrase of encouragement, although had good intent, has changed the media world drastically. This phrase led to the discovery of cavemen (or brought them out of hiding), it has sent cavemen to psychiatrists for help, and created a “please no!” sit-com.

But even though the cavemen have come and gone (again) you have to admit that they started a pop culture phenomenon. There are not too many commercials that can lead to the inspiration of a TV sit-com. Although it was short-lived and ranked in the Top 25 Worst TV Shows Ever, not too many spot commercials can make this claim.

One of the featured commercials on this blog is a GEICO spokesperson apologizing for the slogan to the caveman. The spokesman pleads, “We had no idea that you guys were still around,“ when the caveman with no appetite responds, “Yea, next time do a little research.”

Taking his advice, I did a little research to determine if the GEICO caveman still lives.

My conclusion . . . I have no idea.

I investigated on the site cavemanscrib.com to see if the site was still running. To my surprise, it is, and the caveman was doing some vlogs. The cavemen appeared to be valiant in their vlog but the last post was a new years resolution. This either shows that cavemen, like humans, make resolutions and don’t keep them, or the cavemen campaign died at the end of 2010.

Remembering that nothing is official unless it is on Facebook, I went to the GEICO Caveman Facebook page. Still hard to tell because the Facebook wall photos are superimposed pictures of the cavemen hanging out with fans. There are photos of one caveman at a tailgate party with the Washington Redskins, and the way the Redskins season ended in 2010, it is hard to determine if he would want to show his face to the public ever again.

Then turning to a trusted source of accuracy, Wikipedia, I wanted to see if they would make a statement whether or not the campaign had ended. To my surprise, there was no posting.

Anyone out there, are the cavemen extinct again? Did they go into hiding because GEICO apparently has dropped them from the TV market? Where have you gone?

Sure, they may have been a spotting of you at the Orlando Magic/Miami Heat game, but they have videos of Big Foot, Nessie has appeared in photos, and I have visited Micky Mouse’s ‘house’.

With their ads being able to inspire a TV show, the GEICO Cavemen earns #6 on the top spokesperson who has come and gone.
